Art therapist, seismologist, golf ball diver. Career Outlook, a quarterly online publication of the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, publishes short profiles about off-the-beaten-path careers. The You’re a What? archive goes back to 1999 and holds almost 60 profiles. You can’t help but be curious when you see careers like this:
- Avalanche forecaster
- Rodeo clown
- Process server
- Wind turbine service technician
Looking at some of these might help students understand that the world is so much bigger than what they see around them in their teens.
The whole site, www.bls.gov, surprises me. You’d think a statistics site would be as dry as dust, but this one is easy to navigate, full of interesting features, and surprisingly graphical. Clearly they have creative people who can both speak numbers and organize information for the ordinary person. Spend some time roaming around – it’s well worth it!
